Three houses, one farm
Most Stilbaai accommodation is in town: flats and holiday houses a street or two from the beach. Stonehouse is different. It is a working farm upriver from the town, with 400 m of Goukou River frontage, a private slipway and jetty, a bass dam, game and an olive estate, and every house is let as a whole, so you never share a kitchen with strangers.
Stonehouse Lodge is the big stone and thatch house on the hillside, with a wrap-around veranda over the river, a bar, a pool table and a swimming pool. The rate covers eight guests, and up to twelve can stay on request. White House Cottage is the 1920 farmhouse, restored with two en-suite bedrooms, a family room and its own pool, for up to seven. Grysbok Cottage sleeps eight in three bedrooms with two bathrooms and looks over the farm dam.
Why stay out of town
Space, quiet and the river. Mornings start on the veranda watching the light come up the valley; evenings end with sundowners and bushbuck browsing below the house. Children collect eggs, feed calves and swim off the jetty, and you are still only 10 minutes from the shops, restaurants and Lappiesbaai beach.
For a large group, the three houses can be booked together for a reunion, a milestone birthday or a long family holiday, within walking distance of each other on one farm.
Rates and booking
White House Cottage and Grysbok Cottage start at R2,000 a night midweek, and Stonehouse Lodge at R3,000. Holiday rates are higher, up to R5,000 a night for Stonehouse over December, when there is a 7-night minimum. A 50% deposit secures your dates.
