About the house
Stonehouse is the main house on the farm: a fully furnished, self-catering house built from natural stone under a thatch roof. It sits on a hillside with views from the bedrooms and living areas over the Goukou River and the farmland around it.
The house was designed for easy living with a big group. The lounge has an indoor fireplace for winter, and upstairs there is a pool table on the landing under the thatch beams. Outside there is a trampoline and an undercover braai area, and the shared swimming pool is between Stonehouse and White House Cottage. The kitchen is fully equipped, with a washing machine and a dishwasher, and there are two covered parking bays.
The nightly rate covers eight guests, and up to four more can stay on request for R250 per person per night, twelve in all.
Bedrooms include the king-size master with its four-poster bed and a loft bedroom under the sloping thatch with a window seat at the far end.
A huge veranda wraps around the house. Mornings start on the east side with coffee; by evening everyone has drifted round to the west side for sundowners and the sunset over the river. Bushbuck often come out of the bush to browse below the house in the last light.
There is a hammock slung between two of the stone pillars, loungers along the length of it and room for the whole group to eat outside on a warm night.
The farm’s slipway and floating jetty are below the house, on the Goukou, with two kayaks to paddle from the jetty, and guests swim off the jetty on hot days. The river in front of the farm is deep enough to water-ski at high and low tide, and it is navigable all the way down to the estuary at Stilbaai. Boating from the farm is by arrangement with Alison, so ask her before you bring a boat. Jet-skis are not allowed in the Marine Protected Area.
The private bass dam is a short walk away. Fishing in the dam is catch-and-release, and no licence is needed: it is a private farm dam.
Big families, groups of friends and anyone who wants space: a reunion, a milestone birthday, a fishing weekend or a long family holiday on the Garden Route. If you need more beds, White House Cottage and Grysbok Cottage are on the same farm and can be booked together.
Stilbaai is about 10 minutes away for shops, restaurants and the beach at Lappiesbaai. Riversdale is about half an hour north and Cape Town about four hours west on the N2.
Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 10:00; ask Alison if your travel plans need different times. A 50% non-refundable deposit secures your dates and the balance is due on arrival.
No smoking indoors (the houses are thatched), fires only in the braai areas and fireplaces, quiet after 22:00 and pets in the fenced area at your house. The full house rules are on the house rules page.
This is a working farm with a river, a dam and livestock. Children need an adult with them near the water, at the dam and around the animals. The farm’s stretch of the Goukou lies in the restricted zone of the Stilbaai Marine Protected Area: no fishing and no jet-skis. Bass in the farm dam are catch-and-release.
